MILLBROOK, Ala. ( WSFA A 13-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital after he was struck by a vehicle on Wednesday morning, as reported by the Millbrook Police Department.
The police discovered the wounded teenager following their response to the incident in the 3700 block of Chapman Road at approximately 7:30 a.m.
The youngster was taken to a local hospital for care of injuries described as not life-threatening by Millbrook Police Chief P.K. Johnson.
Richard Dennis, the superintendent of Elmore County Schools, verified that the student from Millbrook Middle School sustained a concussion, skin abrasions known as road rash, bruising on his arm, and fortunately, there was no internal bleeding.
"He will remain under surveillance at his residence for the coming several days. Fortunately, he will make a recovery, and we will provide support during this process," Dennis stated.
According to statements provided by both witnesses and the victim, Johnson mentioned that the incident occurred when the child failed to catch their school bus and decided instead to walk to school. The boy was trying to cross the street from a parking lot located at the intersection of Main Street and Chapman Road.
Johnson stated that the victim tried to cross when the westbound lanes had stopped, but he got struck because he failed to see the approaching vehicles in the eastbound lanes.
"Thankfully, since the vehicle had just exited from Main Street, it wasn't moving quickly when the crash occurred," stated Johnson.
The leader advised people walking to exercise caution when crossing roads and asked motorists to remain vigilant for those on foot.
"We urge all individuals walking alongside our city streets to practice carefulness, making use of marked crosswalks and walkways whenever possible," stated Johnson.
