When many of us purchase a new vehicle and wish to add a personal touch, we often look for ideal bumper stickers or custom floor mats. However, when the car in question is a McLaren, the possibilities extend far beyond these basic upgrades. Most enhancements stem from submitting your car to McLaren Special Operations. This process involves an almost magical transformation, which skeptics can witness firsthand through a tour arranged by Harry’s Garage.
Metcalfe, founder of Britain’s Evo The car magazine is well-acquainted with McLaren, so it didn't come as a shock when they were granted permission to bring a camera into areas labeled "no photography." During this comprehensive tour, he provides an insider’s view of McLaren’s high-performance and customization division, brimming with fascinating initiatives. Whether it involves boosting performance or tailoring interior designs, hues, and materials, nearly every aspect of a McLaren can be modified according to the client's wishes through their MSO department.

The history of MSO is quite short. The department's initial project was showcased at the Pebble Beach Concours back in 2010; however, prior to engaging in bespoke creations, MSO functioned as the customer care unit for the F1 model. Currently, this division focuses on both contemporary and classic vehicles, which can be seen through the plethora of SLRs In the workshop, vehicles are being upgraded with numerous custom modifications on the lifts. However, one standout was a silver F1 model undergoing both a comprehensive check-up and having its fuel tank replaced with an aluminum version. Observing the intricate aspects of these disassembled cars proves quite intriguing.

Harry stopped by looking for a customized steering wheel for his 650S. Despite the undoubtedly high cost of this modification, it underscores how accessible McLaren Special Operations (MSO) can be. Whether they're handling intricate projects on limited-edition vehicles or something as straightforward as upgrading a steering wheel, MSO takes care of various requests from McLaren owners. Although I may not make the trip anytime soon myself, their facility appears impressive, and it's fascinating to observe the effort put into ensuring every one of these hypercars stands out uniquely.
